It’s only January, but there is so much going on in 2021 already. So, let’s check out what’s happening among global Apps players?
After the update of WhatsApp policy on the transfer of personal data to the Facebook advertising system and the removal of the American messenger Parler from the App Store and Google Play, Americans began to massively install the Telegram messenger. As a result, it became the second most downloaded app in the United States as of January 10, 2021.
Who would have thought it could happen?
On January 4, 2021, Facebook’s WhatsApp messenger notified its 2 billion users of a privacy policy update. To continue using the messenger, you need to agree to the transfer of your personal data to the Facebook advertising system. The innovation on the Internet outraged ordinary WhatsApp users, IT experts and world leaders, which led to a massive outflow of the messenger’s audience.

WhatsApp now reserves the right to share collected personal data of users with Facebook and Instagram, regardless of whether they have accounts or profiles on these social networks. Much of the policy on monetizing WhatsApp is broadly in line with what it used to be, but it now clearly states that “WhatsApp receives and shares information from other Facebook projects.” The ability to share data with Facebook has been around for many years, but from February 8th this condition will become mandatory.
Users can be calm about the secrecy of the correspondence: it will remain inviolable because the chats are encrypted, and WhatsApp itself cannot access them. However, using WhatsApp, users will give Facebook access to their contact list, location, transactions, and unique device IDs.
WhatsApp’s new privacy policy has forced many users switch to competitors. As a result, the number of installs of the messenger Signal grew by 4,200% and Telegram – by 91%, making it the second most installed app in the United States in January 2021
Apple and Google have removed Parler messenger from their stores after Donald Trump urged his supporters to use it. The result of this measure was a massive outflow of Parler’s audience to Telegram. According to Sensor Tower, Telegram was installed in the United States about 545 thousand times from Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 to Sunday10th, 2021, which is almost three times more than a week earlier.
